F-Secure Anti-Virus database update caused decreased system performance (April 2, 2008)

On April 1st, F-Secure released a database update, which caused a significant performance impact when installed on the system.

The symptoms include:

  • fssm32.exe process using 100% of CPU time over a continued period unless the on-access-scanner of F-Secure Anti-Virus was disabled,
  • fsavsd.exe process causing high CPU usage (F-Secure Anti-Virus for Microsoft Exchange),
  • MS Exchange Information Store service stopped (F-Secure Anti-Virus for Microsoft Exchange),
  • mediocre performance with different applications,
  • slow system startup,
  • slow network login.

The problem affected:

  • some customers running F-Secure Windows Anti-Virus Clients on Desktops and Servers,
  • some customers running F-Secure Anti-Virus for Microsoft Exchange,
  • some customers running F-Secure Internet Gatekeeper for Windows.

Note! Only a fraction of our users actually experienced any of the symptoms described above.
