What to do if computer is infected?

Infected Master Boot Record (MBR)?

How to clean an infected Master Boot Record (MBR)?

Normally, the Master Boot Record (MBR) can be disinfected with the F-Secure Anti-Virus product but in some cases, i.e. in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, the active MBR is locked by the operating system and cannot, therefore, be disinfected by F-Secure Anti-Virus. Nevertheless, all viruses will be detected.

To disinfect an active MBR that has been infected, do one of the following operations:

  • Use F-Prot for DOS to clean the infected MBR. For more information, see Quick instructions on how to use F-Secure Anti-Virus for DOS (F-Prot).
  • Connect the infected hard drive to another computer and clean it there. When the disk is connected to another computer, the MBR is not active anymore and hence not locked. Then it can be cleaned with F-Secure Anti-Virus.
