E-mail / Spam Issues

Q2. How can I create spam filter rules for multiple accounts?

You can have multiple e-mail accounts without creating spam rules for each. The default Spam rule in Outlook Express filters spam from every account to the deleted items folder.

You can also filter spam to a different folder, or to separate folders for each e-mail account. This way, any e-mail marked as [SPAM] will be separated and moved to its respective spam folder instead of the deleted items folder.

To create spam folders for each account in the main identity (for example Account A and Account B):

1. Open Outlook Express.

2. In the Folders frame, right-click 'Local Folders' and select 'New Folder'.

3. In the ‘Create Folder’ dialog, type a name for the folder (Account_A_SPAM), and click 'OK' to create the folder.

4. Repeat the above steps to create the spam folder for each account (Account_B_SPAM).

To create the account spam rules:

1. On the menu bar, click 'Tools' -> 'Message Rules' -> 'Mail...'. The Message Rules dialog appears.

2. If the default rule ‘[SPAM] -> Deleted items' exists, select it and then click ‘Remove’.

3. On the Mail Rules tab click ‘New...’. The ‘New Mail Rule’ dialog appears.

4. In ‘1. Select the Conditions for your rule’, tick 'Where the Subject line contains specific words'.

a. In ‘Rule Description’, click the link in 'Where the Subject line contains specific words'.

b. In the ‘Type Specific Words’ dialog, type SPAM and then ‘Add’.

c. Click ‘OK’ to close the dialog.

5. In ‘1. Select the Conditions for your rule’, scroll down the list and tick 'Where the message is from the specified account'

a. In ‘3. Rule Description’, click the link in 'Where the message is from the specified account'.

b. In the ‘Select Account’ dialog, select ‘Account_A’.

c. Click ‘OK’ to close the dialog.

6. In ‘2. Select the actions for your rule’, tick 'Move it to the specified folder'.

a. In ‘3. Rule Description’, click the link in 'Move it to the specified folder'.

b. In the ‘Move’ dialog, select the folder ‘Account_A_SPAM’ and click ‘OK’ to close the dialog.

7. In ‘4. Name of the rule’, type a description for the rule such as 'Account_A Spam Rule' and then click ‘OK’ to close the dialog.

8. Click ‘OK’ to close the ‘Message Rules’ dialog and apply the new rules.

9. Each account needs its own spam rule. Repeat the steps above to creating the rule for each account.

Tip! You can also create spam rules for different identities in Outlook Express. Switch identity and follow the steps above to create the spam folders and spam rules.
