Virus Issues
Q5.
Virus & Spy Protection has detected a virus in the "System volume information" or the "_RESTORE" folder. What should I do?
The "System Restore" is a feature of Windows XP and Windows ME. If a virus infects the computer, it is possible that the virus could be backed up in the system restore folder. To scan and clean System Restore, you will first need to disable it.
System Restore is located in either:
- C:\_RESTORE\
- C:\System Volume Information\_restore\
To disable System Restore on Windows XP:
- Close all open programs.
- Right-click My Computer and choose Properties. The System Properties dialog opens.
- Click the System Restore tab on the System Properties dialog.
- Check ‘Turn off System Restore’ or ‘Turn off System Restore’ on all drives.
- Click ‘Apply’ and then click ‘Yes’ when asked if you want to turn off System Restore.
- Click ‘OK’.
- Scan all hard drives and all files for viruses with F-Secure Internet Security.
When you have scanned all files and disinfected them, re-enable the System Restore:
- Right-click My Computer, and choose Properties. The System Properties dialog opens.
- Click the System Restore tab on the System Properties dialog.
- Uncheck ‘Turn off System Restore’ or ‘Turn off System Restore’ on all drives.
- Click ‘Apply’, and then click ‘OK’.
To disable System Restore on Windows ME:
- Open Windows Start menu, select Settings, and then Control Panel.
- Double-click the System icon. The System Properties dialog opens. (Note: If the System icon is not visible, click ‘View all Control Panel options’ to display it).
- On the Performance tab, click File System.
- Click the Troubleshooting tab, and check ‘Disable System Restore’.
- Click ‘OK’ to apply the settings.
- Click ‘Yes’ when you are prompted to restart Windows.
- Scan all hard drives and all files for viruses with F-Secure Internet Security.
When you have scanned all files and disinfected them, re-enable the System Restore:
- Open Windows Start menu, select Settings, and then Control Panel.
- Double-click System.
- On the Performance tab, click File System.
- On the Troubleshooting tab, uncheck ‘Disable System Restore’.
- Click ‘OK’ .
Click ‘Yes’, when you are prompted to restart Windows.
