E-mail / Spam Issues

Q6. How to set up the Opera e-mail program?

Spam Control creates a spam and a phishing folder and filtering rules automatically in Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express, and Windows Mail (in Windows Vista). In the Opera e-mail program, Spam Control creates the spam filter automatically. However, the phishing filter and the filtering rules have to be set up manually.

Note: Spam and phishing filters in Opera are equivalent to folders created for spam and phishing e-mail messages in other e-mail programs.

Follow these instructions to create a filter for phishing e-mail messages and filtering rules in the Opera e-mail program.

Step 1: Create a filter for phishing e-mail messages

To create a filter for phishing e-mail messages, do as follows:

  1. Open the Opera Mail view.
  2. On the Mail pane, right-click All Messages New Filter.
  3. Enter a name for the spam filter. The new filter is shown under Filters on the mail pane.
  4. Repeat steps 1 -3 to create a phishing filter.
  5. Check that the new spam and phishing filters were created and are shown under Filters.

Step 2: Create spam filtering rule

To filter spam e-mail messages, you need to create a filtering rule in the Opera e-mail program. Before you create a spam filtering rule, make sure the spam filter exists.

To create the spam filtering rule, do the following:

  1. Open the Opera Mail view.
  2. Right-click your spam filter and select Properties.
  3. Click the Rules tab.
  4. Click New Rule.
  5. Create a rule for moving an e-mail message to the spam filter:
    1. From the first list, select any header.
    2. From the second list, select contains.
    3. In the text box, enter X-Spam-Flag: Yes as the text you want to match.
Make sure that you leave a space between the colon and 'Yes'.
  6. Click OK to confirm your new spam filtering rule.

Step 3: Create phishing filtering rule

To filter phishing e-mail messages, you need to create a filtering rule in the Opera e-mail program. Before you create a phishing filtering rule, make sure the filter to which phishing e-mail messages can be filtered exists.

To create the phishing filtering rule, do the following:

  1. Open the Opera Mail view.
  2. Right-click your phishing filter and select Properties.
  3. Click the Rules tab.
  4. Click New Rule.
  5. Create a rule for moving an e-mail message to the phishing filter:
    1. From the first list, select any header.
    2. From the second list, select contains.
    3. In the text box, enter X-FS-Classification-Phishing: 9 as the text you want to match.
Make sure that you leave a space between the colon and '9'.
  6. Click OK to confirm your new phishing filtering rule.
