How to Clean an Infected Master Boot Record (MBR)
Normally, a Master Boot Record (MBR) can be
disinfected with F-Secure Anti-Virus but in some cases (Windows 2000
and Windows XP) an active MBR is locked by the operating system and
because of that F-Secure Anti-Virus cannot disinfect it. However, all
viruses will be detected.
If you would like to disinfect this infected
active MBR, you have the two following options:
- You may use F-Prot for DOS to clean the
infected MBR.
Instructions for using F-Prot for DOS can be found here.
- You may connect the infected hard drive to
another computer and clean it there. When connecting the disk to
another computer, MBR is not locked anymore (since it is not active) and
it can be cleaned with F-Secure Anti-Virus.
