Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use the product with MAILsweeper for SMTP version 5?
A:

This applies to F-Secure Anti-Virus for MIMEsweeper version 5.50 on all the supported platforms.

When installing F-Secure Anti-Virus for MIMEsweeper 5.50 on a server running MAILsweeper for SMTP version 5, an error message will be displayed. According to the error there is no supported MIMEsweeper product installed on the system at all.

The error message can be ignored and the product will install and function as normal. The error message occurs because F-Secure Anti-Virus for MIMEsweeper checks from registry whether the MAILsweeper is installed, but cannot find registry entries for MAILsweeper for SMTP version 5 in the same place where they were for the earlier versions.

This problem is fixed in F-Secure Anti-Virus for MIMEsweeper version 5.51, but also version 5.50 can be used with the above workaround.

Q: Sometimes F-Secure Anti-Virus for MIMEsweeper seems to use extensive amount of memory with WEBSweeper.
A:

This applies to F-Secure Anti-Virus for MIMEsweeper versions 5.41, 5.42 on all supported platforms when used together with WEBSweeper.

F-Secure has identified a memory leak problem when the product is used together with WEBSweeper. The problem has been fixed in hotfix 12, available for download in the F-Secure Anti-Virus for MIMEsweeper hotfix section.

Q: In high-load situations the product does not seem to scan all the e-mail attachments.
A:

This applies to F-Secure Anti-Virus for MIMEsweeper versions 5.41, 5.42 on all supported platforms. This applies only if the Content Scanner scenario is used with MIMEsweeper.

In high-load situations the product may occassionally fail to scan some e-mail attachments and will fail to detect infected attachments. F-Secure has identified the problem and has released hotfix 12 to solve the problem. The hotfix is available for download in the F-Secure Anti-Virus for MIMEsweeper hotfix section.

Q: What about management features? Does the product work with F-Secure Policy Manager?
A: All F-Secure Mail Server and Gateway products, can be fully managed with the F-Secure Policy Manager
Q: Can I use the same F-Secure Administrator that I am already using with Workstation Suite?
A: Yes, you can. You just need to import the appropriate mib-files. (For instructions please see the appropriate product manual)
Q: Can I use the same F-Secure Policy Manager Server that I am already using with Workstations?
A: Yes, you can.
Q: How are the virus database updates done?
A: Please see the possible options at the database update page.
Q: Why do you recommend to install the product on Windows NT/2000 Server?
A: Windows NT/2000 Server is better adapted to network services than Workstation; which is, by definition, just designed to be a workstation. Microsoft's license agreements also states that server products must be installed on the server version of the operating system. More information about differences between Windows NT Workstation and Server can be found at the following location:

Q: Do I need to use F-Secure Policy Manager Server or can I use a shared directory (CommDir)?
A: Both solutions are supported.
